Took the girls to the park to "play" tennis. Gettting cold now. Then went to McD's for late Lunch.
Just read Peter Allis has carked it. Sad news, although he was 89. Great quote from John Cleese "Sad to hear of Peter Alliss's death
The most sane and comforting voice I ever heard
I always thought that I could cope with the ending of the world if only Peter was commentating on it"
Not a golfist myself, bit of an American GI really, all the gear and no idea.
Last time I played was the week before lock down ( the time before that being about 8+ years before.) It was my best mate Jon's stag do. As I was going to be best man thought I should take part. We went down the night before for a recce. Sampled several establishments and tested the quality of the refreshment. Ended the evening with a kebab in homage to the days young lads did that sort of thing.
Anyway after helping Jon buy some prizes we set of to the golf course. Everyone assembled and divided into like ability. Short of "discussion" about handicaps, but finally we were off.
Needless to say I was in the last / slowest group. With me was, Mark Jon's Brother in law, who hadn't played for so long one shoe had rotted away and the sole fell off on the first hole. Kenny and another chap, who I'm ashamed can not remember his name. Hole 4 was "closest the pin" (ie how near can you get to the hole from the tee). Oh I forgot we had a 5th person going round with us, he was injured so offered to score for us all, which was just as well as I hadn't a clue about this stapleford thing. Anyway I teed, is that the correct term (who cares it's only a game), and even managed to get near the green. Kenny got dam close to the flag, Mark said I think that is nearer than the marker, it was, yay. Next was the chap I can't remember his name. He got even nearer! So one of our no hopers team won! We Carried on round getting further and further behind everyone else. My mate Paul and Uncle Fester (not players) texted from the bar about sending a search party out. The light started going as we teed off the 18th. Got back to the club house. Presentation time. Nearest the hole. Unremembered name man, then top score, same guy! At this point the guys who could play with their low but disputed handicaps started to go red in the face. Prizes for top team US, the no hopers! Now fortunately, the man with no name decline his singles prize and gave it to one of the others, riot avoided. Anyway good night out at the same pubs as night before, then a superb curry, then bar at hotel to late hours, with the obligatory good night Vienna (brandy and baileys).
Homework done, bath and bed for little one.
